As employers in California know by now, 2012 was a busy year for changes to employment laws. In addition to significant court decisions and legislation, substantial amendments were made to California regulations relating to pregnancy disability leave and to disability discrimination.
These amended regulations came from the Fair Employment and Housing Commission (FEHC) - just before the agency ceased to exist. The FEHC was eliminated, effective January 1, 2013, because a new state law created a Fair Employment and Housing Council under the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. The council will assume the former commission's rulemaking and regulatory authority.
Employers should already be preparing themselves to make the necessary changes to workplace policies and procedures to comply with the provisions of the new regulations. To help employers make that transition, CalChamber prepared this white paper to provide an overview of the amendments and to provide some context to employers.
Both sets of amendments took effect on December 30, 2012, and employers can take certain steps immediately to make sure they are in compliance.
